I stuck my snout right up into the air and took a deep whiff.

Mmmmmmm.

At first, the only things I smelled in the beach air were the fruit-smoothie coconut, papaya, mango, persimmon, and honeysuckle smells that were from all the people using tropical suntan lotions and sunblocks.

But then I smelled the clammy scent of the sea: ocean foam, fish, sand, seaweed, and the hot breeze, all mixed together.

My nose went nuts. I worked it up and down the beach. Since it was after high tide, the sand was soft, and walking on it was tough. I dodged swimmers and sand castles along the way.

And then I found a line of paw prints. They could have belonged to any old dog. So I sniffed closer.

I smelled something familiar!

As I glanced around, I caught sight of a couple of other pooches. There was a Labrador retriever diving into the water. I spotted a silver-gray spaniel covered in wet sand. There was a bulldog with a sparkly rhinestone collar and leash.

But these prints didn’t belong to any of those dogs.

Nanny Sarah was right behind me. She wanted to form a real search party.

“But Sunny, dear, you need to stick with one of us—just in case.”

I shook out my coat and licked Nanny Sarah’s hand. That was my way of saying, okeydoke. Her hand tasted like sunblock.

All at once I caught the scent of something else on the wind, something I hadn’t smelledbefore, something that reminded me even more of Rex.

Hot dog? Pretzels? The smells from the food stalls wafted down toward the beach.

Of course, we had not had lunch yet, so the wafting odor of grilled hot dogs was a delicious surprise. It was all I could think about the moment I smelled it. I was hungry, even after the ice pops.

Hot dogs were one of Rex’s favorite foods, too. I wondered if maybe he’d smelled this same smell. If he had, the situation might have gone something like this:

Rex got a whiff of the dogs (the steaming hot, nonbarking kind).

The hot-dog odor sent that beagle pouncing over towels and legs and a dozen falling-down sand castles.

Rex got lost on the beach.

Rex got distracted by the boardwalk.

Rex got taken away by some stranger???
